Today we began our PBL unit on Plants! Students' learning will be focused around the essential question, How do plants use their parts to survive, grow, and meet their needs? Here are some pictures of our entry event, in which first graders went outside to explore plants and take pictures with iPads of an example. Then, students came back into the classroom to discuss their findings with their group and make posters. What better way to welcome in spring than the fun of studying plants!

Today's math lesson got students really exited! We practiced comparing numbers using less than, greater than, and equal to with base 10 units. After students displayed their numbers, they took turns talking with partners about which number was greater/lesser and why. Next, students took pictures of their displays using iPads and uploaded the images onto their Discovery Education math boards. Then, students filled in sentence prompts comparing their numbers by typing their responses onto their boards. This took some time and practice, but I'm so proud of my students for their ability to listen, follow directions, and be patient when doing something new and challenging! Way to go Imagineers!
First graders had great fun planning and building leprechaun traps for St. Patrick's Day! First, they each designed a leprechaun trap on paper and took turns sharing ideas with their group. Then, the students took ideas from each other and worked together to build a group trap. Traps were set before they left for the day with the hopes of catching "Lucky" our classroom leprechaun. Well, we didn't get Lucky...but, we did get Lucky Charms and a messy classroom! Here's to better luck next year! Happy we got Lucky Charms!Traps are set!Our finished traps!Building leprechaun traps!Today JMC students celebrated Pi Day! Under the leadership of our wonderful Mathletes, first graders were introduced to the meaning of Pi through a presentation and fun video. Then, we headed outside to display this amazing mathematical number using sidewalk chalk! Happy Pi Day everyone! :)
Here are the kiddos who received Perfect Attendance Awards for the month of February! These students were recognized for being on time everyday and not having any tardies! "HOOT, HOOT, HOOT-RAY" for their awesome achievement!
In first grade this year, students are learning how to be close readers. Here are a couple of pictures that show students getting a deeper understanding of the literature story, A Lost Button. After rereading a passage , students then looked for text evidence in order to determine a character's point of view. It's so fun to be reading detectives!
Jayda was the big winner of our Teacher Treasure fundraiser that was a part of our Flight Open House! So, today we got to enjoy eating McDonald's lunch together. Thanks for the lunch date Jayda!
Enjoy this video of JMC's Flight Museum & Open House event! So proud of our staff, students, and school community! Tonight was a wonderful celebration of JMC students hard work and learning centered around our school's vertically aligned PBL's on Flight! Each grade level and student groups took part in displaying work and projects for our school community, families, and guests to explore. It was a truly amazing evening of achievement, fun, and togetherness. Thank you to everyone to came out to support our school and students!
The final projects for our Flight PBL consisted of students building group and individual parachutes. Their creations were tied to the literature of Jack and the Beanstalk, and our driving question: Can you design a parachute that will help Jack escape from the giant? Students used their learning about geometric shapes to choose a design for their parachute that they thought would work the best. Next, students shared their reasonings and expressed their opinions in writing. After many days of learning, planning, and building, students were more than ready to test their projects! They were also excited to tie in technology and took turns working in partners to video tape each other launching their parachutes. Now, we look forward to sharing our learning and experiences at the JMC Flight Museum and Open House! Testing Our Parachutes!Building Individual ParachutesLaunching Group Parachutes |
