First graders were "stemming it up" for Halloween today! For today's math lesson, we created Geo Pumpkins! Materials used were pumpkins, colored rubber bands, and push pins. Students were given the task to design a "Geo Pumpkin." They first pushed the pins into the pumpkin and then connected the rubber bands to the pins to create shapes. Some made faces for their pumpkin and others covered their pumpkin with different shapes. I was so impressed with the students' imagination and creativity. IMAGINEERS at work in first grade!!!

Today was a fantastic day of learning and fun as our first grade classes took a field trip to the Sacramento Zoo! Student scientists explored the many different animal classifications. They distinguished animals by their characteristics and documented their findings. It was the perfect investigation to coincide with our Animal PBL unit! After our exploration, we enjoyed lunch together in the park. Our field trip was possible due to the funding provided by our JMC PTSA and the volunteer efforts of our families! Thank you everyone for providing such a wonderful learning opportunity for our students! Today JMC School celebrated our first ever Pumpkin STEMfest! Our wonderful PTSA put together an evening that was lively and fun for our students, staff, and families. Thank you to everyone who organized, volunteered, donated to, and supported tonight's event! A couple of awesome achievements were recognized during today's morning flag salute! First, JMC students were awarded for Perfect Attendance for the month of September. This entailed students being at school every day and on time! Second, some select students were honored with our first "OWLS" Award for Ownership. Congratulations to Jaiden Dimas...for taking Ownership in making sure that he knows what to do and helps other to do the same! And, to Calli Sensibaugh...for taking Ownership in taking care of her surroundings and that of others too! Way to go first graders...I am so proud of all of your efforts!
Today JMC students were treated with a visit from our local fire department! The fire fighters engaged our students with important information about fire safety and what to do in the event of an emergency. Thank you to all our first responders who work so hard to help others in need every day!
