Today's lesson for our Sound PBL was tied to the literature The Listening Walk by Paul Showers. After reading the story, students took a walk outside to "listen" to and document all the different sounds that they could hear. Once our walk was complete, we then shared our findings and listed them on a class chart. This was such an engaging activity that made way for some fun PBL time!

The focus of our next PBL unit is Sound. And, what better way to introduce the concept of sound than by listening to some instruments! Today first graders took a walking field trip to our Swain campus to visit our band instructor, Mr. Ryan. Being able to connect this learning experience with one of our very own JMC instructors was such treat for our students. Thank you Mr. Ryan!
In celebration of Thanksgiving, students read the story Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano. This silly story centers around a turkey who is trying to disguise himself in order to not be chosen for Thanksgiving dinner. After reading the story, students had a lot of fun thinking of different items that they could eat for Thanksgiving dinner instead of turkey. Some ideas that students had included, hot dogs, cheeseburgers, chicken nuggets, tacos, scrambled eggs, spaghetti, and macaroni & cheese...just to name a few. Students then did a poem rewrite in which they suggested their idea for dinner instead of eating turkey:) It was a good time listening to and laughing about the ideas that students came up with. Happy Turkey Day everyone!
Today was an exciting day, as first graders from both classes gave their animal presentations! Each class took turns sharing their learning and creations about animals. The students were articulate, respectful, and took pride in showcasing their projects. I am so proud of all their efforts! As part of our Animal PBL unit, students researched and designed an animal to create. Their creation was tied to our essential question, How do animals use their external parts to survive, grow, and meet their needs? Their task was to create a "new" animal based upon their learning. Students had to combine two animal groups and choose other components, such as, features, diet, habitat, and interesting facts. A very busy (and somewhat messy) project, but so worth seeing the students interest and excitement!
Today our first graders were treated with a visit from live quail babies! Mrs.Beckman, a grandmother from Mrs. Bautista's class, brought in the newly hatched birds to share with our students. She presented information on different bird eggs, engaged students with questioning about birds, and added to their learning of birds by sharing facts about quails. The students were so excited to get a first hand look at the quail babies and we thank Mrs. Beckman for her presentation and sharing her knowledge with us! |
