Here's a pic of the class sporting their "rekenrek" bracelets. A rekenrek is an arithmetic rack that is used for counting. The students made one as part of today's math activity using pipe cleaners and beads. It's a math tool that's quick, easy and fun way to use!

Our first math unit has first graders building number sense and learning about partner numbers to 10. A fun way to develop these skills is with an activity called "Shake Those Beans." Students work in partners and race to "shake & spill" 2-colored beans to build different equations. The partner who "shakes & spills" their chosen partner numbers to the top first wins. There was lots of fun, cheering, and a couple of close battles going on!
One of my favorite projects for Back to School is our First Day Books (first week really...haha)! It's such a fun and creative way for students to share their thoughts and feelings about being in a new grade with new friends and a new teacher. I was so impressed with the effort they put into doing their best work! The first week of school was spent with students putting together an "OWL" About Me bag with items that described them. Each student took a turn during the week to share about himself/herself with the class. And...they all did a wonderful job with their listening and speaking skills. Such a fun way to get to know our friends in first grade!
Here are a few pics from JMC's second annual Tie Dye Party! This family event is put on by our wonderful PTSA. Each student and staff member were provided with a free t-shirt to tie dye, which can be worn on our Friday Spirit Days at school. We were also treated with cool refreshments and music:) A great time for all building our school community! It was a day of fun and learning about the Solar Eclipse! The students watched a video and made a "lapbook." Lapbooks are such creative projects that students can use to display their learning about anything. And when you're done, you have a book to put into your lap and enjoy!
What better way to kick off math than by sorting, counting, adding, and eating some M&M's! Students had great fun using these tasty treats to explore math concepts on our first week back to school...Yum!!!
We're off to a fabulous start in first grade! Here is a class pic of students sharing their "Birthday Sticks." Each student designed a stick which resembled himself or herself...and will be proudly displayed on our class Birthday Board!
