Today first graders had great fun building rekenrek bracelets using beads and pipe cleaners! A rekenrek is a math tool that the supports the development of number sense in children. After making our bracelets, students then used white boards to problem solve and work out math stories. It was a productive day of using our math tools in first grade!

Today our district math coach, Ms. Wensel, came in to help first graders learn how to navigate and login to their chrome books. Students were eager and excited for this day to finally be here! Once students were all logged in, they were able to access Zearn, a digital practice component that connects to our math curriculum. We were so pleased with how all of them displayed patience and listening skills in following along with directions. It was also nice to see how helpful the students were with each other!
First graders had a great time today exploring partner numbers of 6 with an activity called, "Shake and Spill!" While working in pairs, each student choose a different partner numbers of 6 that they thought would be the first to make it to the top of the chart. They took turns shaking and spilling two-colored beans in the hopes of rolling their partner numbers. Each time the correct partner numbers was rolled, students then recorded it by coloring in a box on the chart. The first one who made it to the top was the winner. Such a fun and engaging way for students to practice number sense! It was a morning "switcharoo" for parents today, as they lined up in our first grade line and were escorted to class by the students. Parents got a chance to take a peek into our classroom and see what we've been up to the first week of school. After a short visit, students then lead parents into the multi-use room to have coffee and donuts with Mrs. Heck. It was a happy and fun way to start our school day! JMC is so luck y to have Mr. Fernandes as our library/media technician! As we await our school library to be up and running, he's offered to come into classes and read aloud a story to students. He spent our first library day reading one of his favorite stories, The Book With No Pictures, by B. J. Novak. And...he had the students laughing so hard, I'm sure you could hear them through the walls! It's such a treat to be able to sit in and listen to him read aloud to students! Thank you Mr. Fernandes!
Nothing goes together better than learning and M&M's! It's that time again in first grade where we get to explore math using these colorful and tasty candies. Students had lots of fun sorting, counting, graphing, adding, and talking about M&M's. But, the best part was getting to eat them...of course! Today another school year got underway with a new group of kiddos and a new school site! Admist all the newness and busyness, everyone was happy and excited to start the day...especially me! Our new site at JMC Riverbrook is where I began my teaching career 20 years ago when it was formerly known as Merryhill School! And to top that, I am teaching in the same classroom where I previously taught kindergarten back in the day...talk about going back in time!!! Looking forward to making many more memories here the second time around!
