We celebrated Johnny Appleseed's birthday with some apple tasting. The Granny Smith got the most votes for best liked apple, although the expressions on the students' faces would make you think otherwise! :) The class also made fun apple hats that looked as if they were wearing pots on their heads...just like Johnny did! :)

Here are some pictures of a project we did for our Summer PBL. Since making bubbles is such a fun summer activity, we decided to try and build our own bubble wands. Our question was whether or not we could make the bubble wands using pipe cleaners and straws. The students were very creative with their designs and some were able to make their wands into three dimensional shapes!
Students had a blast in math doing an activity called "Shake & Spill!" They worked in partners finding different ways to make the partners of 6 and 7. We used 2-colored counters that we put into cups. Then, each student took turn to "shake & spill' the counters. The colors of the counters were used to make number sentences. The students would then shade in the matching number sentence onto a graph. The first one to reach the top was the winner!
It's amazing how quickly the time has gone by! September was filled with lots of busy and fun activities. The students have settled into our classroom routines and procedures. They are learning how to work together in partners and in groups. We are practicing discussions with one another, in which students can share their ideas and explain their thinking. In math, students constructed a rekenrek bracelet. A rekenrek is a counting frame, which students can use to practice and learn partners of ten. It was quick and simple to make...all you need is pipe cleaners and 2 colors of beads (5 of each). The students really enjoyed making their rekenreks!
