Our class had great fun working with together to play a math game called "Shake & Spill." Students used 2 colored beans to shake and spill partner numbers that make 8. Once students shook and spilled their beans, they then found the matching number bond and colored it in on the graph. After the activity, we discussed the data and found out that the majority of the students shook and spilled 3 and 5 and/or 5 and 3 the most. Another day of learning and fun in first grade!

In science, students have started a Project Based Learning (PBL) unit about seasonal changes and patterns. Below are some pics of students engaging in observations about the summer season. Students are using their senses to determine how the season of summer looks, feels, smells, and sounds. They documented their findings in their PBL Notebooks, discussed their findings with table groups, and then shared out with the class. Such a beautiful day to be outside learning about and enjoying our summer season! :) This year our first grade classes did a Back to School activity called "Whooo Are You?" Students were asked to decorate a paper bag and put items into it that represented something about them; baby picture, family photo, favorite color, something special, favorite food or recipe, hobby, and favorite candy. Throughout the week, students took turns sharing their OWL bags with their classmates. This was such a wonderful activity for the start of school and getting to know our friends!
We have now had 8 days back to school and the students are settling in to their new surroundings! Our time has been filled with getting to know each other, our school & classroom rules, and the routines & procedures that will be a part of our daily happenings at school. We're working on becoming a classroom community and I have to say, we're off to a great start! Ask your child to share about OWLS (Ownership, Wisdom, Learning, Safety). These are the character traits that we will focus on in order to be productive citizens with our school and classroom. We just had our first week of homework and I am happy to report that all 25 students showed responsibility by turning in their homework packets! :) Just a reminder that the Reading Log and Writing Journal are a part of the weekly homework as well. Please be sure to initial the Reading Log on the front of the Homework Newsletter daily and have your students complete 1 page in their writing journal each week. Please refer to the blue homework folder for policies and helpers to assist your child if needed. The Behavior Calendar is also something that should be shared and initialed daily, so be sure to ask your child to discuss with you about his/her day at school. As always, feel free to contact me should you have any comments, concerns, or questions. Thank you! A few parents have asked me about helping in the classroom in some way. Please refer to the Parent Survey & Volunteer Form linked to our classroom website at archer1stgrade.weebly.com. Here you can provide information about your child that you may want to share with me and also fill in the times/days that you are available to help in the classroom or assist in some other way. For those of who have helped with donations of wish list items to our classroom...Thank You!!! Your support is very much appreciated:) Here are a few pictures from our M & M Math activity. The students were so engaged and had great fun sorting, graphing, and counting M & M candies. But, there was nothing better than getting to eat them at the end! Loved seeing their smiles and sounds of "Oooh" and "Mmmm" as they put the candies in their mouths:) Having fun and learning...that's what it's all about! |
