Our measurement module in math has been so engaging and fun for students! We've been working on measuring and comparing objects using the terms longer than and shorter than. Activities have included working with partners in guessing lengths of paper strips, measuring/comparing our shoes and classroom objects, and following a string of yarn to determine the path that is longer than/shorter than. Love that my students choose math as one of the best parts of their day!

This past week first graders had great fun planning, designing, and building leprechaun traps! After reading the story, How to Trap a Leprechaun by Sue Fliess, students brainstormed ideas about materials needed to build a successful trap. From there, they made their own materials list, formed a plan, and sketched a design of their trap. Then, it was building time which had students measuring, cutting, gluing, taping, and creating. When finished, students set their traps and hoped to be my first class to catch "Lucky"...our classroom leprechaun. It was a fantastic effort, yet Lucky slipped through once again. But, he did leave the students some chocolate coins and Lucky Charms for all their hard work. Oh, and of course, a big mess to go with it! Trap construction! The finished products!Traps are set!We didn't catch a leprechaun...but we got treats and a mess instead!Pi Day is a big deal at JMC Charter! Today's activities included Pi-ifying students' names, making Pi-plates with our Mathletes' helpers Arsh and Kota, and of course, eating some tasty Pi-e! Happy Pi Day everyone! One of this week's homework assignments in math was for students to connect our learning about shapes in school to their learning about shapes at home. They were to create 3D structures using household items. Students had the options of sketching or taking a picture of their 3D creations. Here are a few pictures that families chose to share with me. Thank you to Ari, Cruz, Gino, Braden, Paige, Evan, and Dina for your showing your pride in your work!
Today students celebrated Read Across America in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday! Our day of Dr. Seuss was filled with reading books & Scholastic News, listening to read alouds, making Cat in the Hat hats, working on activity packets with partners, and creating hat glyphs that show students' choices in reading. Happy Reading to all! During today's morning flag salute, JMC students were recognized for Perfect Attendance and our OWLS Character Award. Congratulations to Ari, Calli, Gino, and Silas for being present and on time to school during the months of January and February! And, Kudos to Iliana Leach and Evan Magness who were selected as our OWLS recipients for "Learning." Iliana puts forth her best effort every day to further her learning & progress and Evan is a teacher to others and ensures that all are learning while at school. So very proud their outstanding efforts!
First graders recently began Module 5 in math which has them identifying, composing, and partitioning shapes. Today's lesson had students working with partners to make structures using 3D shapes. After working together to make their structures, students then tallied the number of different shapes and discussed their reasonings for shapes that were used/not used. Learning that is purposeful and fun is why my students have a love for math! |
