It was a happy day in first grade today with the celebration of the folk hero Johnny Appleseed! Today we read about this famous pioneer who traveled all over planting apple trees in order to provide food for the pioneer families. Students had great fun reading books about apples, making apple hats, and doing some apple exploration using their senses. Of course the best part was the apple tasting...YUM!

Tonight was our first Academic Parent Teacher Team (APTT) meeting of the school year. The meeting consists of two main components: 1) Classroom Team Meetings and 2) Teacher Coaching. The classroom meeting involved reviewing academic data and setting SMART goals for students. Teacher coaching allowed me the opportunity to model instructional strategies and provide resources for families that their student can use at home. The APTT structure truly supports the home/school connection and sets the foundation for student success in school. I so appreciate all of the families for your attendance and support tonight! Today students were introduced to our new school counselor, Mrs. Butcher. Her job will be to support students in the areas of academics and social & emotional well being. She'll be at our campus every Wednesday. Welcome to JMC Mrs. Butcher...we are very happy to have you here with us!
We spend a lot of time in first grade learning through collaboration with partners. Today in math students worked together to practice equal expressions. They used linking cubes to create different expressions and compare their thinking. The students love this time of learning together! Today students were introduced to Zearn. This is a digital supplement to the math curriculum that we use in class. Students' understanding of math concepts and strategies are reinforced through additional practice. Not only are we learners...we are Zearners! |
