Today students were introduced to Zearn. This is a digital supplement to the math curriculum that we use in class. Students' understanding of math concepts and strategies are reinforced through additional practice. Not only are we learners...we are Zearners!

Getting to know our friends is part of our back to school tradition in first grade. In doing so, students participate in an activity called "OWL" About Me, in which they design an "owl" bag and fill it with different objects, pictures, and special things that tell about them. Students looked forward to this time of learning about our classmates each day and it was such a fun way to build our classroom community:) GO OWLS!
In math today students had great fun with an activity called "Shake & Spill." In exploring partner numbers to 10, students used two-colored beans to shake & spill different partner number combinations. It's visual, hands-on, and an effective way for students to deepen their understanding of number sense!
Tie Dye Night is an annual event at JMC put on by our amazing PTSA. Students receive a free JMC spirit wear t-shirt and then enjoy a fun (and messy) tie dye experience together with staff, family and friends. Thank you PTSA for another wonderful kick-off to our school year! Today students were visited by our JMC security officer...Officer Panos! He introduced himself, talked about his role as a security officer, and happily took time to answer questions from students as well. We are so lucky to have him taking care of us at JMC! Thank you Officer Panos!
Today was our first day back to school at JMC! Students came in feeling a wide range of different emotions...happy, excited, nervous, shy, scared...all common for the first day in a new grade. But in no time at all, all were ready to start their day:) I'm looking forward to another special year of learning and fun in first grade with my new group of kiddos! I also want to thank my families for all the generous donations to start off our school year:) Your support is greatly appreciated!
First graders have really been hard at work and enjoying our math module on 2D & 3D shapes! Throughout their investigations, students have been learning how to compare, compose, and partition geometric shapes. This math module is also connected to our PBL unit on Flight, which has the students even more eager in their learning. Some students connected their learning from school to home by creating 3D structures using objects from around their house and sending me a picture to share about it! Each day students are excited and motivated during math instruction...just what a teacher wants from her students! First graders had great fun this past week building leprechaun traps! After reading the story, How to Trap a Leprechaun by Sue Fliess, students took time to plan, design, and construct their traps. We were on a mission to catch "Lucky" our classroom leprechaun. Everyone worked hard and did an amazing job, yet Lucky slipped through our traps once again. And although he left us a note and a huge mess, he also left students his favorite treat...Lucky Charms! Look out Lucky...we'll be ready to try again next year! Just like Halloween and Valentine's Day, Pi Day is a celebrated day at JMC. First graders participated in creating a Pi Day paper chain that represented the numbers in Pi. Our chain was combined with the chains from other classes, which will be connected together and on display in the multi-use room. Students were also visited by two of our 5th grade friends from our Mathletes club. They listened to a presentation, heard a read aloud and created a bracelet representing the digits of Pi. A few students even competed to see who could memorize the most Pi digits. Congrats to Madison who remembered 13 digits of Pi! Afterwards, they finished off the Pi Day celebration by eating some tasty "pie" as a treat. Thank you to Rahmya, Callie and our families who donated pies for helping to make today a special one for our classroom! Today students had great fun celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America! They spent time reading books by Dr. Seuss and making hats like the one worn by the Cat in the Hat. We also had a special guest stop by to visit. Ms. Cecelia from our local Save Mart grocery store came in to real aloud to our class. We very happy to have a member of our community take time to read with us today! Thank you Ms. Cecelia! |
